HISTORIC
NEW BERN

Founded in 1710 New Bern was settled by Swiss and German adventurers from Bern, Switzerland.  Rich in history, it is the site of North Carolina's Colonial Capitol and its first State Capitol.

Royal Governor William Tryon made this seaport the colonial capitol.  Tryon Palace, the governor’s mansion,  was the meeting place for American patriots
who defied British authority in 1774.  Today the restored 18th-century capitol and residence is one of New Bern’s main attractions.  Tryon Palace offers visitors an opportunity to experience over 200 years of American history and acres of period inspired gardens.

A major port and trading center in the 1800's, New Bern was captured and occupied by the Union Army after a fierce battle on March 14, 1862. New Bern has three historic districts with homes, stores, and churches dating as far back as the early 18th century. History abounds around every corner with over 150 historic landmarks.  New Bern is also noted for the fact that Pepsi Cola was invented here by pharmacist, Caleb Bradham, who concocted the drink in 1898.

Today after a major downtown revitalization project,
New Bern's downtown offers
a number of museums, shops, galleries, restaurants, historic sites, waterfront hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations, marina's, parks, historic homes and churches, a new waterfront convention center and special events that showcase the city's many resources.
